As part of our regular evaluations with DND,  CASARA units are now being asked to demonstate 'Ground Homing of ELT' signals.

This can, has and may put CASARA members into a true 'search and rescue' situation- not just 'search, locate and NOCL.'  There are a number of 'readiness' elements in our planning, training, equipment and approaches to search coordination that we may wish to consider to ensure the safety of our members who respond and to ensure that if we are the first on the scene we can render effective assistance to those in need.

Chris Rule and the Zone 2 members have prepared and tested a  Ground Search Homing Protocol [Discussion Draft]

Feel free to read this draft - As always your comments would be most welcome !

Contact Chris CASARA Saskatchewan Zone 2 for more information.

*Please note that this Ground ELT Homing Protocol is intended for use where there is a certainty that a plane has gone down -  This would not apply to the majority of ELT searches which usually do not involve a certainty of  distress i.e. radio call/ radar contact/ visual report/ confirmed overdue etc. but rather an intentional activation of an ELT.

What if CASARA members were first on the scene???

Have you thought about what you might find?
