Recently license-free FRS radios (Family Radio Service)  have reached the market with a frequency range (UHF-FM, 462.5625-467.7125 MHz).  FRS radios are durable, relatively inexpensive ($50-100 CDN) and very effective for ground to air communications.

However, as with most tools they are seldom available when you really need them!

Recent experimentation and SAR experience in Saskatchewan has shown that a simple parachute deployed radio can help establish communication between CASARA air crews and ground search teams.

Our Recipe:

  • One plastic peanut butter tub (or similar).
  • Ziplock bag
  • small piece of bubble pack
  • Parachute (home- made or try the Princess Auto Surplus Drones)
  • 100 mile-per- hour tape (duct tape)
  • FRS Radios (2) - Look for models with optional earbuds and AA batteries for improved use in  aircraft environments.
